Class Update
Primary 1/2 have had a fantastic winter term. All children are settled well into their class and have made some fantastic friendships and relationships. We have been making great progress in all areas across the curriculum and have been involved in many exciting play-based learning activities.
Literacy
Reading
This term we will be focusing on asking and answering question about their ORT reading book and building upon their knowledge of sight words as the books become more difficult. Primary 1’s will be practising their blending of all single sounds as we move onto diagraphs. We will continue to promote reading for pleasure will be developed through our inviting class library.
Writing
We will create lists, instructions and diary entries as part of our critical writing block. Using the Talk for Writing strategies we will create story maps to help us navigate the structure of these pieces. We will continue to work on adding the correct punctuation to our work. During handwriting we will be moving onto joining letters together.
Talking and Listening
We will be developing our talking and listening skills through presenting to the class in our ‘Katie Morag’ topic and through sharing our weekly news.
Maths
Number, Money and Measure
Primary 1 have been busy learning about addition and are now exploring subtraction. Primary 2 have been learning their two times table and are now onto dividing by two. We are all very enthusiastic Mathematical learners.
This term both Primary 1 and Primary 2 will be learning to measure length, weight and capacity in non-standard units. We will be using cubes, hand spans, clips etc to measure length and weight of objects around the classroom. The class will experiment with water and cups to determine capacity. Primary 2 will also move on to look at measuring in standard units, such as cm and m.
Learning Across the Curriculum
Our topic this term is ‘Katie Morag’ where we will be exploring the stories of Katie Morag as a starting point to discuss Scottish life, culture and sayings as well as the difference between living on a small island community and our city life.
In RME, we are looking at celebration of Chinese New Year and the religion of Hinduism.
In Science, we will be discovering facts about outer space and how the weather is created. This will involve some exciting experiments that we can take outdoors.
Additional Information
PE days are Monday and Friday and Outdoor Learning Day is Wednesday. Please ensure your child has a suitable PE kit and weather appropriate clothing including a waterproof jacket and suitable shoes for these activities. Please make sure all of your child’s items of clothing and their belongings have their name clearly labelled on each item.
Fruit breaks will continue on a daily basis, please encourage your child to bring a piece of fruit to participate. Plain water in a suitable bottle is permitted within the classroom however, please note, fizzy drinks, diluting juice and flavoured waters are not encouraged.
We have class representatives for a range of committees throughout the school. These include Pupil Council, Health and Eco, Rights, Sports Council, Social Enterprise and Charities.
