Primary 1/2, Mrs Roy
Class Update

Primary 1/2 have had a fantastic winter term. All children are settled well into their class and have made some fantastic friendships and relationships. We have been making great progress in all areas across the curriculum and have been involved in many exciting play-based learning activities.

This term we will be focusing on asking and answering question about their ORT reading book and building upon their knowledge of sight words as the books become more difficult. Primary 1’s will be practising their blending of all single sounds as we move onto diagraphs. We will continue to promote reading for pleasure will be developed through our inviting class library.

We will create lists, instructions and diary entries as part of our critical writing block. Using the Talk for Writing strategies we will create story maps to help us navigate the structure of these pieces. We will continue to work on adding the correct punctuation to our work. During handwriting we will be moving onto joining letters together.

Talking and Listening
We will be developing our talking and listening skills through presenting to the class in our ‘Katie Morag’ topic and through sharing our weekly news.

Number, Money and Measure

Primary 1 have been busy learning about addition and are now exploring subtraction. Primary 2 have been learning their two times table and are now onto dividing by two. We are all very enthusiastic Mathematical learners.

This term both Primary 1 and Primary 2 will be learning to measure length, weight and capacity in non-standard units. We will be using cubes, hand spans, clips etc to measure length and weight of objects around the classroom. The class will experiment with water and cups to determine capacity. Primary 2 will also move on to look at measuring in standard units, such as cm and m.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Our topic this term is ‘Katie Morag’ where we will be exploring the stories of Katie Morag as a starting point to discuss Scottish life, culture and sayings as well as the difference between living on a small island community and our city life.

In RME, we are looking at celebration of Chinese New Year and the religion of Hinduism.

In Science, we will be discovering facts about outer space and how the weather is created. This will involve some exciting experiments that we can take outdoors.
