Class Update

Primary 7 have been working hard on their return to class after the Christmas holidays. We will be voting for our new captains who will represent each of the four different houses, thanks to all the previous captains for their hard work. Primary 7 are looking forward to their residential at Inverclyde and have been enjoying weekly session with their friends in P7 at St Anthony’s to get to know them!

Literacy

Reading

Reading for enjoyment will be encouraged with 15-minute personal reading sessions each day. The children will continue to develop their reading skills through class novels. Our class reading books for term 2 are War Horse and The Invisible Dog, we will be using a range of Stonelaw Reading Strategies to examine our text such as predicting, inferring and visualising. We will be learning new vocabulary and developing comprehension skills through activities relating to the books and take part in a weekly Word of the Week challenge to encourage a varied vocabulary.

Writing
Primary 7 will be developing their spelling abilities through engaging with the North Lanarkshire Active Literacy programme. This involves using active strategies each day in class and promotes ownership of learning as the children are encouraged to create their own word lists to coincide with the week’s phoneme(s). Pupils have a weekly spelling test on a Friday and so should practise their words throughout the week. Primary 7 pupils will also be taking part in dictation exercises to ensure spelling strategies are being transferred into all written work. Our writing is delivered through the “Talk for Writing” programme and will focus on discursive and persuasive writing in term 2.

Talking and Listening
In term 2, our focus for Talking and Listening is learning about being able to give and receive instructions, that are both verbal and written. This involves using our Nurture Talks and barrier games to improve our conversation skills. We will also be completing solo talks based on our favourite aspects of learning for World War 2.

Maths
Number, Money and Measure
In term 2 we have been learning about different types of numbers such as negative numbers, multiples and factors. We have completed calculations using them and have worked on using them within a context such as money or temperature. We will also be focusing on fractions, decimals and percentages, learning how to complete the four operations using them and working out the relationships between all three.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Our class topic this term is ‘World War 2’. We will compare and contrast life during the war with our life now; specifically looking at how children were affected by food rationing and evacuation. We will learn about life in the trenches, the way soldiers had to live day to day and how it affected them after the war. We will also be completing outdoor learning linked to our topic – learning all about camouflage!
