Primary 6, Miss Simpson
Class Update

Primary 6 have settled extremely well into class, after the winter break, and have been following the classroom rules and procedures. Primary 6 continue to be fantastic role models to Primary 1 and are enjoying being Buddies and having the responsibility of being Vice-Captains. This term we will be working hard to achieve our Silver and Gold Awards.

Primary 6 have access to the class library and are encouraged to choose a book to read for their own enjoyment. They will be developing their comprehension skills, as well as using the Stonelaw Reading Strategies to help develop their understanding of their reading books.

Primary 6 are using ‘Talk for Writing’ strategies to help them develop as writers. This term they will be focusing on non-chronological reports, by understanding and applying the structure of reports, and extending their vocabulary so they sound like experts. Primary 6 will also be using ‘North Lanarkshire Council Active Literacy’ spelling strategies to help with their spelling. Children will be encouraged to think, look and examine words where the same sound is written in different ways.

Talking and Listening
Primary 6 will be developing their skills of listening and giving verbal instructions. They will practise to ensure that their instructions are clear, concise and comprehensive, as well as making sure to listen carefully to instructions being given.

Number, Money and Measure
This term Primary 6 will be looking at subtraction and multiplication. They will be working with numbers within 2 decimal places. Primary 6 will continue to develop their mental maths fluency using the ‘Big Maths’ and ‘Heinmann Active Maths’ resources. When available, children will also have access to online resources such as Sumdog and Topmarks to continue to develop their numeracy skills.

Shape, Position and Movement
During this term, Primary 6 will be learning how to identify and measure different types of angles.

Learning Across the Curriculum

Primary 6 will be learning about ‘The EU’ this term. We will share what we think we know and what we would like to find out by using KWL grids. They will have the opportunity to develop their research skills by researching various member states in the EU. They will be learning about what the EU is, the history of the EU and the important role is has today. Primary 6 will be reading “The Mystery of the Golden Stars” as a class novel to introduce the EU and learn about its functions.
