It is great to see Primary 5 settling back into the school routines after our Christmas break. They enjoyed sharing their stories about how they spent their holidays. Last term the pupils enjoyed their topic ‘Ancient Greece,’ and they loved showing off their learning in their class assembly. Thank you to all visitors who came to watch Primary 5 and who joined in with our Ancient Greece artwork activity in the class afterwards. Primary 5 are well on our way to earning lots of house points for excellent work, behaviour and attitude. Hopefully we will have lots more Silver and possibly Gold Awards given out this term.
Literacy
Reading The children will continue to develop their reading skills through exploring novels, texts from ORT and Dandelion Readers. The pupils will use strategies such as ‘connecting,’ ‘determining importance’ and ‘self-questioning’ this term to help them understand their text and any new vocabulary. We will be using a range of fiction and non-fiction texts within the class and discuss the differences between these styles of texts.
Writing This term we will be working on critical and discursive writing. We will be using Talk4Writing to help us correctly structure pieces, use persuasive language, topic openers and connectives. We will self and peer assess using the Cathkin Learning Community Writing Targets. The children will continue to follow the North Lanarkshire Literacy programme for spelling. Strategies such as ‘Partner Dictation,’ ‘Diacritical Marking’ and ‘Create a Mnemonic’ tasks will be used to reinforce the weekly spelling words. The pupils will also be continuing to develop their knowledge of French vocabulary. We will be covering weather, colours and classroom objects this term.
Talking and Listening To develop our talking and listening skills, pupils will continue to use Nurture Talks, which has great activities to encourage meaningful conversations. We will be focusing on how to give and follow instructions along with how to identify facts and opinions.
Maths Number, Money and Measure This term we will continue to work on the four operations of addition, subtraction, multiplying and dividing, ensuring that we can complete calculations both mentally and written. When covering the operations, we will link money and where possible decimals. We will all continue to work on our mental maths skills through our daily Big Maths activities. The class will start to explore time and calendars also.
Shape, Position and Movement We will also explore symmetry, looking at shapes at patterns to identify how many lines of symmetry they have. The pupils will have opportunities to complete their own symmetrical patterns.
Learning Across the Curriculum
Primary 5 will be moving on to learn all about Mexico and The Maya people. We will learn about the landscape of Mexico and compare it Scotland’s landscape. We will work in partners and groups to research all about Mexican life, comparing it to our lives in Scotland. We will be exploring Mexico’s weather, land uses, history, culture and celebrations that Mexicans may participate in. We will learn lots about what foods Mexicans eat and why they celebrate “Day of the Dead.” We will also have the opportunity to explore the Mayan civilisation and look at places of interest within Mexico. https://www.kids-world-travel-guide.com/mexico-facts.html http://www.sciencekids.co.nz/sciencefacts/countries/mexico.html https://www.atozkidsstuff.com/mexico.html
